Kegel exercises were originally developed by Dr. Arnold Kegel to exercise the pelvic floor muscles, particularly the pubococcygeus muscles (PC muscles). These muscles are engaged in urination, bowel movements, sexual intercourse and, in females, during labor. Age, operation, labour, extra weight and specific diseases can bring on debilitating of the muscles, resulting in urinary and fecal incontinence. In men, weakening of the pelvic floor muscles can also cause premature ejaculation. In both males and females, the weakened pelvis can bring on a decrease in sexual gratification. Hence, Kegel exercises are suitable for various purposes. This kind of exercising should be the first point of a management programme to treat stress or urinary and fecal incontinence. The pc muscles engaged by this kind of exercises include the anal and urinary sphincter. In males, the exercises can "lift" the testicles. It may take several weeks to notice a considerable improvement, but some males observe their testicles lifting immediately. Like any muscle of the body, the pelvic floor muscles, if not involved or "worked out" on a regular basis, debilitate and finally atrophy. Post-menopausal females commonly suffer from vaginal atrophy. In women, deficiency of muscle tone in the pelvic area can lead to vaginal or uterine prolapse, sometimes referred to as fallen womb. Kegel exercises can prevent the complications and can be helpful in treating them, too. To ensure you are well aware how to contract your pelvic floor muscles, try to stop the stream of urine while you are going to the bathroom. If you manage to do this, you have got the basic movement. Or try another method: having put a finger into the vagina, try to compress the surrounding muscles. Try to feel your vagina become tighter and your pelvic floor move up. Afterwards stop contracting your muscles and feel your pelvic floor move downwards to the starting position. Kegel exercises are to be done on a regular basis to achieve the best results. A set of Kegel exercises for males and females can be found at kegel-exercise.org. Remember it is better to preclude a disease than to treat it. |
